In 2012 I had reason to complain about a professional person who for four years, I had always thought of as a friend until he instigated a serious professional wrongdoing upon me and a colleague which involved us reporting the incident to the Police. The person in question was of indian origin which was of no interest to me or anyone else at the time. I only mention it now since this fact plays a very important role in the ensuing episode.
Unfortunately, in order to create a “smoke screen”, he invented a story that I had racially abused him on no fewer than 2 occasions. I was interviewed by the police under caution and proved to them beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was innocent of any wrong doing, especially since on one of the dates in question, I was 200 miles away attending a wedding and staying in a hotel with my then partner.
Unable to make his lies work with the police, he began a vendetta against me and complained to my professional body that I had racially abused him and what can only be described as a nightmare ensued for close on two years.
Eventually, I was able to give categorical proof that I had in no way ever made any racist comments. In fact, quite the contrary, I am of refugee stock and know what it is like to have racial abuse perpetrated against me.
The case was thrown out when the aforementioned person was confronted with the evidence and had to admit that in fact he had lied.
It was a hugely painful experience for me and cost me health and thousands of pounds to defend myself.
The reason I am writing this blog is because during this whole horrific affair, I discovered that there are endless web sites and organisations to help if you are of ethnic descent and suffering from racism, sexism in fact any ism,
but there is no help if you are white and suffering from racism perpetrated by someone of a different ethnic background. There is also no help if you are accused of racism by an individual from another race.
I do not believe that my being wrongly and criminally accused was a first. It made me wonder how many other people had had a similar experience and suffered in a similar way or even worse not been able to disprove the allegations and become known as racists?
Racism in any form is abhorrent whoever the perpetrator is and should rightly be stamped out, however I really do believe that as the present law stands, if someone of an ethnic minority accuses you, justly or unjustly of racism, you are guilty until proven innocent. If one is innocent, trying to prove you are not a racist/sexist is like asking a starving man to prove he is hungry!
There should be recourse for all groups, White, Afro Caribbean , Asian, Chinese, male and female and we should all be deemed innocent until proven guilty !
